Daphne McClure

A Multiple Image Installation of St Michael’s Mount

paintings, drawings, prints in various media

Daphne McClure has collected paintings and prints of St Michael’s Mount for 25 years, fascinated by the way artists have interpreted this island castle.

The history of the Mount is long and intriguing; it was formed in approximately 2000BC when Mounts Bay, previously marsh forest, was flooded by the sea and St Michaels Mount became a 230ft island. A small harbour was developed and used by ships loading tin mined in Penwith carrying it to Mediterranean countries for smelting with copper to produce bronze.

Apart from McClure’s own collection, many paintings have generously been loaned for this installation, spanning 400 years of inspiration. She has included reproduction prints of J M W Turner and Alfred Wallis to the region’s own contemporary artists.

With the gallery’s recently opened pavilion it is the first time that the building has looked towards the sea. The new panoramic window frames this iconic and historical landmark that has been the home of the St Aubyn family since 1659. McClure is indebted to Lord St Levan for his assistance in preparation for this exhibition.
