Peter
Webster

Peter Webster’s response to ‘Lineage’ was to engage in a process which extended, and asked questions of, his regular practice as a painter, and which involved collaboration. He wanted the end result to connect to a different audience and involve them in an artwork
The inspiration was Dancer an enamelled plaque designed by Laura Knight and set in a jewelled mount by Ella Naper. He responded to both the specific physical detail of the pendant (colour, shape and light refraction) and a broader reweaving of its imagery.
Webster collaborated with two designers, Will Webster and Paul Betowski, to produce a Club Flyer. An updated image of the 1915 ballerina is taken to a new audience, distributed through local clubs, bars and takeaways. Thus wherever the flyer is found, the reader has information about the ‘Lineage’ exhibition on one side and on the second side an artwork. It could lead you to come and see the show, it could be taped to your fridge, it could end up on the floor…….
The second stage for Webster was to work with selected parts of the design imagery to make small paintings, exploring to his ongoing interest in the possibilities of narrative in abstract painting.
Ballerina Enamel by Ella Naper and Laura Knight
