Paul
Nicholls
School is out (in the playground)
Acrylic on canvas
10 children’s paintings
Having been a school teacher for many years, Paul Nicholls chose to respond to the painting School is Out by Elizabeth Forbes.
During a residency at Stithians Primary School, Nicholls and a group of ten children looked at the relationships expressed in the painting. On a visit to Penlee House they studied the childrens clothing and classrooms furniture. Back at their school they used digital cameras to capture aspects of playtime. They made paintings of particular scenes and through watching them Nicholls began to prepare for his own painting which is approximately the same size as the original.
Nicholls intention was to show positive sides of childhood where there is an atmosphere of sharing and caring for one another, feeling that some good publicity for the joys of childhood was essential.
