The inspiration for Denny Long’s piece is a love of the maritime life and a wish to make a work that would be accessible and enjoyable first and foremost to the local community.

Two aspects of her work, printmaking and installation, are brought together in this cyanotype blue print display. Blue printing is a technique using stencils placed on paper coated with a cyanotype solution and exposed to the sun. Local artist Stacey Ebel provided Long with technical assistance for this project, having introduced the process to Long at a summer school at Penlee House, organised by Newlyn Art Gallery.

Alongside her own imagery Long has used fish box stencils, many from companies who exported pilchards to Italy. They were kindly lent by Nick Howell at the Pilchard Works, and from a collection at St Ives Museum, lent by Brian and Margaret Stevens, as well as Daphne McClure.

The Stella Verde stencil has been reproduced into a small poster which has been put up around Newlyn and Penzance - taking the art out of the gallery into the public realm.
