Born in 1938 into a chaotic world , my early life in India and Africa , and then abrupt removal to a conventional strict girls boarding school before the age of ten years old still affects me . Luckily from an early age I could draw well and found continual solace and pleasure in mark making . Continually reacting to the changing situations around me , and the ability to translate these experiences into paintings , sculpture and printmaking been the continuing mainstay of my work .
This is not a way of life , it IS life as much as eating , breathing loving .
My new work , created since 2023 reflects the fact of the physical changes that have over come me . The innate desire to make work never left me but after a rather strange and wonderful experience ( a few hours of what is usually described as a near death experience ) I found I could no longer engage with the figurative work that had consumed me for the major part of my working . I look back on this work now with the eyes of and judgement of a stranger . I am quite happy and sometimes pleasantly surprised by some of my very early work , but because of a deep change in me that involvement has passed .
What I have been engaged with now , are large colour field paintings dominated by a horizon line and with a ‘ fore shore ‘ from which to view the space in front of you . These are the direct result of the experience I had .
I have also become engaged in making some simple sculptures and very recently some film ideas .
of course I am always glad that this strong creative urge directs my life .
St Martins school of Art , aged 16 where I wasted my opportunities in favour of parties , music and being young . Then after a marriage , divorce and children , three great years and a good degree from Hornsey College of art 1984 and the pleasure of exhibiting my art in many galleries and great venues ever since then , including Coventry Cathedral who exhibited my more difficult political work for one summer at the end of the 1980s .
exhibited widely in London and the South West , Turin , and New Mexico . Future Project WOMEN TALKING an exhibition in conjunction with the poet Ellen Phethean who chose several paintings for her book of the same name . These paintings and large copies of her poems beside them will be shown in September 2024 Dates sept 12 till October 5 th . This will be at the Tremenhere Gallery it self .
This exhibition will also have an opportunity for Ellen and I to talk publicly about the similarity of creativity in our two fields and the challenge of combining work and family as female artists . This talk will be on September 24 th .
I have brought out several small books , mostly poetry , usually scribbled when access to the studio is restricted . The first LIFELOVESEXDEATH A few years ago followed by THE GERONIMO SPRINGS MOTEL , and during lock down a childrens book with drawings , made with a young neighbour of mine , called ‘Alfie , the outside cat . ‘
