About

Dan Pyne

Dan Pyne was born in London (Fitzrovia), and studied Scientific Illustration at Middlesex University.  Since 2010 he has lived and worked in Cornwall where he is a lead tutor at the Newlyn School of art and an elected member of the Newlyn Society of Artists.  His work examines both our historical and ongoing political interrelationships as human beings. Questioning the relationship between fear and empathy and in particular the reasons we disconnect from each other and how this in turn affects our environment.

‘I have come to realise that in most of my works I am initially trying to understand how I feel about the things I find most difficult to accept and understand in the world. In turn I then use them to ask questions of the viewer…how do you feel about this?

The questions aren’t always direct, they are often obfuscated through the visual language and the material choices.  I like the idea of creating visual metaphors that invite interpretation and question our attitudes to both one another and to the world in which we exist.’

Dan’s work grows up between the boundaries of sculpture, installation, and traditional painting. His work is modern-decadent, exploring what is natural in the unnatural, the beauty in decay, the desire in desolation…[it] carries the ‘black mirror’ of our dirty underbelly, they are without a doubt beautiful and astonishing objects.
