A Life Being Ken Turner

Ken Turner has lived and worked in St Ives since the nineties, and has been a constant

and passionate contributor to the West Penwith Arts ‘scene’, with his memorable live

performances, and provocative paintings. Between Friday 14th Oct and Wed 26th, at the

PZ Gallery in Penzance, Ken will show a selection of his paintings and drawings from the

1960’s to the present.  You are warmly invited to the Private View on Friday Oct 14th 5pm

to celebrate his life and work, where he will give a brief talk about the importance of artists’

studio practice  as a philosophical tool.

On Saturday 22nd October at 5pm there will be a  performance at the gallery, where Ken will

collaborate with dancer Stephanie Richards in response to his paintings.

 Ken will be in conversation with visual anthropologist Professor Amanda Ravetz on Monday 24th October

Ashley Hansen in Porthleven Festival

 

NSA member Ashley Hanson is showing his Porthleven series of paintings as part of the Porthleven Arts Festival on 27th September. There will be a talk and presentation of the 60 paintings in the series on Tuesday 27th September from 4-5pm at the Breageside Netloft. On Wednesday 28th September there will be a preview of the Freedom in Painting in Porthleven exhibtion from 5.30 – 7pm at The Old Lifeboat House and the exhibition itself will be open for 1 day only on Thursday 29th September from 10-5pm. on Friday 30th September there will be Open Studio and exhibition of 20 of the Porthleven series paintings at the same venue.

St Clare Medical Centre, Penzance

The NSA has recently begun a very exciting partnership with the St Clare Medical Centre in Penzance. We have worked with the partners and their Site Manager, Richard Allan, to develop their beautiful new medical centre. Almost thirty NSA artists have submitted work to hang in the building, in public and staff areas and meeting rooms for one year.
We put the work up last weekend and will hold an event to celebrate the partnership and give people a chance to look round, in November. We are absolutely thrilled to see our work there in such a fabulous space – and it has transformed the whole atmosphere of the building. The NSA would like to thank both Richard and the partners for giving us a chance to give back to our community in this way.

As I Was Going to St Ives

The St Ives September Festival will be showing As I Was Going to St Ives – a new documentary film about three visual artists who work with text and who have connections to St Ives – NSA member Vivian Pedley, together with artists Rex Dixon and Adrian Frost. Showing at the Penwith Gallery in St Ives, with an accompanying exhibition, the film will premiere on the 13th September with a 5.30 opening and bar. It will then continue showing during the St Ives September Festival from 14 – 24 September 2022. A short trailer for the film can be seen here

Stuart Ross Recent Work – Exhibition

NSA member Stuart Ross has an exhibition of recent work opening at the Morvah Schoolhouse Gallery next month.  The show will run from 6th – 19th August, open daily 11-5pm.

Three St Ives Artists – Exhibition

A group exhibition of three painters living and working in the historical ‘Downalong’ St Ives – NSA members Mike Newton and Heather McAlpine together with artist Lynnette Pierce. Their studios are a stone’s throw from the Crypt gallery. After their successful three person show last July they have decided to come together again to show a new vibrant body of work. Their diverse painting styles compliment each other and create a colourful and energetic exhibition with good conversation between individual paintings.

 

Heather McAlpine is a committee member of the  Newlyn Society of Artists and a member of the St Ives Society of Artists. Working from her studio nearby in Whites Old Workshops studio 2, Porthmeor Rd St Ives, her current body of work reflects her love of wild swimming and the colours of the St Ives coastline.

Mike Newton is vice chair of the Newlyn Society of Artists and currently works in Studio 4a in Whites Old Workshops, Porthmeor Road, St Ives. He will be showing recent works from his ongoing series of paintings, mixing abstraction with figuration, portraying famous poets.

Lynette Pierce is a director and member of the St Ives Society of Artists and an associate member of the Penwith Gallery. She works most days in her Penwith studio no5 Back Road East, St Ives. Her colourful abstract paintings are inspired by nature’s many textures. The Cornish landscape in which she lives is a big influence and can be seen in her recent work.

Ashley Hanson and Sara Bor in ‘Duality’

NSA members Ashley Hanson and Sar Bor are showing work in a joint exhibition at the Crypt Gallery in St Ives, opening on Sat 11th and running until Fri 17th June. The Private View is on Sat afternoon from 4-6pm.

Friends and colleagues for 10 years, Hanson and Bor explore some of the same subject matter with distinct approaches.  Hanson has twin strands to his practice: the coastal work based on his love of the Cornish coastline and ports, and his book paintings. ‘Painting the Novel’ investigates the combination of a painting being both a tangible object and an illusion: both abstraction and figuration. Tim Ridley wins Turing award to visit Michaël Borremans in Ghent

Whilst completing his MA in Painting at Arts University Plymouth (formerly Plymouth College of Art) Tim won a Turing travel award. He is spending June in Ghent, meeting with Michaël Borremans at his studio, and firming up ties with Singulart in Paris. The painting  “De Maagd” (The Virgin), featured was a gift from Borremans and is high up on the brutalist concrete bell tower next to church of St Nicholas’.

Women You Should Know by Mike Newton

NSA member Mike Newton is showing his series of paintings Women You Should Know at the Borlase Smart Room in Porthmeor Studios, Back Road West, St Ives. The show runs from 28th May to 4th June from 2.00-5.00pm daily

 

As a project during the 2021 COVID-19 lockdown I painted 60 Oil sketches of female poets to accompany a Cento (A Collage Poem) composed of lines from their poetry. The planned exhibition in 2021 was then cancelled due to the outbreak of the Omicron variant. They are now finally going to be shown next week in St Ives, Cornwall.

Writing a cento is a kind of an extension of reading, a way to prolong the pleasure of lines and quotations as a souvenir of the reading experience. It becomes a mosaic of treasured lines that may provoke and or amuse the reader in their new context.

In this form of poetry, lines are “lifted” from other sources and “woven” together to create a new, whole poem that stands on its own. Each portrait is 25x23cm on prepared paper and is titled with the line that poet has had selected for the Cento composed by Johana C. Migdal in commemoration of women’s history month annually observed in March.
