EXHIBITION | Autumn 2024

Saturday October 12th to Sunday November 3rd

The Autumn show is one of Newlyn Society of Artists’ twice-yearly exhibitions at the Tremenheere gallery. Autumn 2024 presents a cross section of members’ most recent work. Thought provoking and diverse, there is no house style in the NSA. The visitor can expect to see high-quality work reflecting the wide range of practice within the membership, where the nature and challenges of contemporary life can find an artistic voice.

The Opening Party is on Saturday 12th October 2.00 to 4.00pm. All are welcome.

On Sunday October 20th a group of participating artists will be at the gallery from 2.00 to 3.30pm to talk to visitors about the ideas and processes involved in their practice. If you can’t make the talks, there will be one or two participating artists at the gallery every day. They will be happy to answer any questions.

The gallery is open every day 11.00 – 4.00pm (Except Monday)

Entry to the gallery is free.

Anima Mundi are proud to present ‘Nepantla‘, a solo exhibition by Carlos Zapata.

Zapata’s idiosyncratic sculpture and installation deals with diverse challenging and potent themes ranging from poverty, conflict, religion and race, yet paradoxically, the overriding characteristics of the work are of empathy and compassion and a deep search for spirituality

‘Nepantla’ launches Friday 6th September 6.30 – 8.30pm

This August Viv Allbright’s  mixed media painting ‘Palimpsest’ was selected for the Tate Modern in their ‘Inside Job’ Biennale Staff Exhibition. The selection this year was drawn from all 4 Tates open to all staff working there, in this case Viv was a volunteer.

Now in its fourth iteration, Inside Job (the Tate Staff Biennale) gives Tate staff the opportunity to showcase their work at Tate Modern. Inside Job features work by over 200 staff members from all departments.

The exhibition boasts work from practising professionals, aspirational masters as well as those for whom art is a rewarding pastime. The mix of work on display ranges from the 2D, 3D, film, performance and live art. Inside Job reflects and celebrates the diversity of Tate staff working across London, Liverpool and St Ives.

The exhibition has been curated and organised by the Inside Job Collective: a group of Tate staff members united in their shared interest to showcase the talents of Tate’s staff.

Sea & Sky: a Solo  Exhibition by Heather McAlpine

Immerse yourself in the colourful, large-scale paintings of Heather McAlpine, a St Ives based artist inspired by the sea and her love of wild swimming.

Born in Stirling, Scotland, Heather McAlpine’s creative journey led her to London, where she earned an MA from the Royal College of Art. Then, after 16 years of living and painting in Vancouver, Canada, fate guided her to the rugged shores of Cornwall, where she has found solace and inspiration for the past eight years. She now works from her studio in historic ‘Downalong’, nestled in between three of her favourite beaches.

Her paintings embody the essence of St Ives’ unique colour palette and reflect not only the striking visual aspect of the ocean but also the sensory and emotional experiences that come with it.

The exhibition promises an immersive experience into her world, reflecting her deep affinity for the sea, wild swimming and the immersive process of painting itself. The exhibition will include a range of paintings, from her small ‘captured moments’ on paper to her large, semi-abstract expressive canvases.

Edge of Dark

Tremenheere Gallery

10 October to 1 November 2020

This October at Tremenheere Gallery the Newlyn Society of Artists presents ‘Edge of Dark’, an exhibition of paintings, drawings, sculptures and installations which explore ideas of light and dark, curated by respected artist Jesse Leroy Smith. For this exhibition, NSA members have been invited to consider themes around ‘Edge of Dark’ in any way they choose. Some have produced work which is abstract in nature, exploring line, colour, shape, light and shade. Some have looked at edges and tone in landscape, natural forms or figurative work, while others have created works which consider the issues facing our society in these challenging times.

Curator Jesse Leroy Smith says:

“The title was provocative enough last year [when it was originally posed, before the pandemic], it felt like so much was changing. Now it seems we are in the darkest days, but that is when resilience, camaraderie and hope are forged. One reason I am excited to curate this show is because it was conceived before 2020. It can address the foreboding challenges we face in every aspect of our futures, not with rhetoric and ideologies but with crayons to paper, ink to plaster. The show will be poor in cynicism and rich in wonder.”

This exhibition is the latest in a must-see programme by West Cornwall’s historic Newlyn Society of Artists. Admission to the gallery is free.

Newlyn Society of Artists

Founded in 1896 by an influential group of artists, the NSA today is a diverse group of around 85 contemporary artists working across all disciplines from painting and sculpture to performance, the moving image and more. The NSA is run by an annually elected voluntary committee, who continue to seek new opportunities and welcome new membership applications. In 2017, the NSA began an exciting new partnership with Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, whose new, contemporary gallery space is the venue for their twice-yearly exhibitions.
